It also reminds me of the (sometimes vague, sometimes extremely explicit) unease with which a preference for the soft and warm is presented, for example in Christie's work--e.g. Poirot's dislike of open windows and fresh air while sleeping is suspect, marking him as Foreign and Effeminate rather than made of the Stern British Stuff like Hastings (although, it is also more complicated than that, as Hastings is the dumb sidekick and Poirot the brilliant investigator) ... prejudices die hard apparently
