And I gotta say, it really is pissing me off that only only do they not use the same translation all down the list, but they don't even consistently say which translations they're using. I don't even care which translation they use, but the stylistic whiplash is enough to give anybody a headache.

(It was every bit as ridiculous as I thought it would be.)

And that led me to this thread and the corresponding subthread where he really just gets into it with me, for no fucking reason, on the subject of "no mass produced book series marketed towards children would depict homosexuality in 1997-2007. No publisher would take it on".

This is a factually untrue statement, and I have the booklists to prove it. I'm not saying these books were necessarily available to every kid who might reasonably have wanted to read them, but to say they didn't exist at all? I bought some of them from Scholastic book forms! Bruce Coville? He's a big name! The Skull of Truth came out in 1997! Norma Klein? She's a big name! People absolutely heard of her who read realistic YA fiction. Francesca Lia Block? I never read her, but I had heard about her, I knew people who read her books, I knew her books touched on homosexuality. But here he is, arguing with me about it! Why are we arguing about something so absurd?

At least I figured out why this is bugging me, and if I get another reply I will tell him. When he claims that these books did not exist, that no mainstream publisher would have printed any of them, that no mainstream bookseller would have stocked them in the children's or teens sections, he's buying into the bullshit queerphobic narrative that before X date, everything was hunky-dory and those people either a. didn't exist or b. were happily closeted.

In the a version of this narrative, things were better then, and it is all this publicity that makes people think they're LGBTQ. In the b version, things are immeasurably better now and all those LGBTQ people should just stfu already and be grateful. And key to either version is erasing the proof that it's just not true*.

And part of that proof is juvenile fiction published by mainstream publishers in the dark days of the 20th century that involve LGBTQ themes.

FFS, it's like another flavor of "Women didn't write sci-fi until yesterday" and yes we did. Don't fucking devalue their very real difficulties in getting published and staying published by saying they didn't exist at all.

(And if you're about to tell me that I grew up in a socially progressive part of the country, I know! But according to his claims, so did he, with a liberal family and a bookseller uncle to boot. If he never heard of a single YA book with LGBTQ themes at that age, I imagine that must be because he didn't ask anybody or look very hard. I didn't ask anybody or look very hard either, and I still bumped into them just, like, on the shelves! Neither of us was growing up in a Fundiegelical hellhole, so.)

Note: I would've asked him if he'd ever heard of Heather Has Two Mommies, but that turns out to have been printed by an indie publisher after all. I never woulda thunkit after all the press it got!

* It is measurably better now in some aspects. The important thing is that the past does not just get uniformly more queerphobic the further back you go, and in a way that maps perfectly onto modern bigotry.

It's certainly too late for his really adult siblings to escape that toxic hellscape that is their family, and even if they did they're not likely to become substantially better people as a result, but he's E's age, I think. So every once in a while I remember I'm rooting for him to just get out. Young adults can change a lot the first few years of being adults.

One of the kids asked about why we learn aikido, a martial art, if the goal is to simply not be in situations where we need to fight. Said kid got, after class ended, a discussion of that where each of the three people responding had a slightly different (but cohesive!) take on the matter, which boils down to: Try not to get into a fight, but train yourself so that should it ever happen you know how to respond as safely as possible for everyone involved.

The other layer of aikido, the one that doesn't happen on the mat, is something I think the parents heard in our answers but the kids probably didn't. Which is: the philosophy of aikido can be applied to any situation, not just physical conflict. It's aikido when you defuse an argument before it happens. It's aikido to see a misunderstanding and clarify the matter. It's aikido any time someone comes at you with aggression and you respond with de-escalation.

The kids seemed fascinated by this, and accepted the explanation. The parents were quite delighted by it.

Also in work news:

Apparently, starting Monday, we're doing overtime for a number of weeks that could be just two, could be a month, and could just be... ongoing... They're gonna judge on a week-to-week basis. (This is not mandatory. They cannot make it mandatory. It's just set up so that you need to explicitly opt out on a day-to-day basis, so realistically we're probably all doing overtime most of the time.)

It'll be 10hr days M-Th, and then our normal 6hr day on Friday. Apparently if they get more pressure about us being ~behind schedule~ (which: hah, who's surprised, it's a big project and also one of the things we're working on is an add that someone else fucked up and we're being paid to fix) they might add Friday overtime and also Saturday overtime, neither of which I'm going to say yes to (I like having weekends, thanks, work eats enough time as it is). But it sure will be interesting if that becomes a Thing!

"Said gave".

As in "He said gave consent for the procedure" or "My professor said gave me an F".

A search for this was productive, if mildly frustrating - there's a lot of other reasons for those words to appear next to each other, but it definitely does seem to appear in the sense I saw more often than you'd expect for a speaker error.

You can see some examples at the following places:

Also, it does not matter if they said gave consent in the past for the same action. Consent is about the here-and-now.

An attorney (or firm) can be relieved of the duties owed to previously clients is said give consent (in writing) to do so. (This one is so odd I'm not sure it isn't an error.)

Nebraska's Matt Rhule said gave an update on the status of Dylan Raiola....

My instructor said gave me an F

Dr. David Persse said gave an update on what wastewater showed

6x agatha harkness fic recs

Uhhhhh it was meant to be Agatha All Along fic recs but then a Wandavision one snuck in. Anyway I keep seeing fic rec lists and going 'wow! all of those sound boring and awful and like the fics were written for a totally different show!' so I made my own. Alphabetical order by title, minimal warnings, these authors almost certainly have other good A3 fics that I didn't rec, yknow, all the Kimara Makes A Rec List staples. Weirdly weighted towards smut, to an extent I wasn't expecting.

allow my love to find her brutal way to me. agatha all along, agatha/rio, billy, mrs hart. 9.1k words, rated e. by [personal profile] thiswildernessismyhome.
Rio just wants one conversation with Agatha. One. And if she has to trap them both in a time loop to make it happen, so be it.

Fic that made me think 'yeah okay I'll believe the show's version of Nicky specifically so I can read this fic reacting to it'. Which is not a thing I thought I would ever say, but here we are, the Rio voice in this is that good.

body of work. agatha all along, agatha/rio. 38.k+ words (wip), rated e. by [archiveofourown.org profile] gnawingsuspicion
Throughout history, Agatha Harkness has left behind no shortage of casualties. As her power and body count grows, she catches the eye of Death herself.

Fic that doubles and triples and quadruples down on YES Agatha's an unrepentant mass murder and YES magic is super fucking weird and YES Rio is Death is also not human. Still a WIP so possibly will lead to regrets later, but eh, the first seven chapters are probably one of my favourite backstories for them I've seen.

In the cabin, Rio faces her biggest obstacle yet: a genuinely good person. (or, the time loop fic where Death drags Alice Wu-Gulliver, rather unwillingly, back to life)

Rio doesn't understand how she can eat Agatha whole. Rio makes this Alice's problem. Alice is not Not okay with this despite her best efforts.

until next time. wandavision, agatha & wanda. 3.8k words, rated t. by [archiveofourown.org profile] mothersquared.

Over in this MetaFilter thread I've been going on and on about:

the books use the medium of prose well, including unreliable narration; how can the TV series adapt that? can it?

the bookending of the two big rescues at the start and end of All Systems Red, and how Wells describes people helping each other overcome their automatic patterns

etc.

I welcome your thoughts! I have spent like 3 hours this week talking about this stuff and would happily talk 3 more.

If you sometimes have blood in your urine, even just a bit, even just now and then, and you test negative for a urinary tract infection, ask your doctor if you need to see a urologist. If it happens twice (especially if you smoke), TELL your doctor you need to see a urologist.

I've just had my follow-up appointment from having a small cancerous growth removed from my bladder. I'm fine! I feel fine! My prognosis is fine! But I'm glad we caught it early and wish I had gone to a specialist even earlier.

The doctor compared this procedure to removing a malignant mole from your arm or a polyp they find during a colonoscopy, so as procedures go this was a pretty simple one.

I now have to have a cytoscopy to watch for regrowth, and after four years the frequency will go down but I'll have to have them annually for the rest of my life, just another annual thing like a Pap or a mammogram.

I would have pursued more healthcare if I hadn't been scared. So if you're scared the way I was, I'll put some details below the cut; if you're squeamish, maybe don't click that arrow.

I haven't written anything akin to poetry in years, but oh man, I saw the funniest thing on Tumblr this morning and I've had one of those weird non-rhyming beat poems bouncing in my head ever since. Someone's blog was listed as "Minors DNI"... but they also listed their age as 24. And all I can think is, Sweetie, I am literally twice your age, and you are telling kids six years younger than you not to interact with you. Maybe you shouldn't be interacting with me.

I didn't say it was a good poem. 🤣

It's spring break here, and 10yo is in an art camp every morning for three hours. So far he's really enjoying it: they are painting and drawing and making a mess, and he's made a friend and has a couple of much younger fans who clearly think he is Coolness Personified. (Which he is.) The rec center where the class is has a pretty awesome skate park next to it, too, so we spent about 45 after class having a picnic while he fretted over going down the inclines on his skateboard, after which he confessed that he likes watching better than doing it himself. Which, fair. I like watching baseball, I don't particularly enjoy playing it. But I did go down one of the smaller inclines on his scooter, and I did not die, so I think that's one point for setting good examples.

15yo is dying to get out of town; at this point, the only time we have is this coming weekend. Not that any of us particularly care about Easter, beyond the scope of "do I get any presents." I'm a sucker; I'd rather give them each Playstation or Roblox gift cards than another chocolate bunny that they'll invariably ignore and which I'll end up eating myself because it's there. Which is also fine -- no candy, that is -- because it's not like any of us need any of that anyway. Anyway, he wants to go to Philadelphia; I'm not entirely sure why, I'm a little worried he has ideas about seeing all the sports games he can, but that's not something I really want to do with 10yo in tow because 10yo has limited patience for sports games (and frankly, so do I). But the Revolutionary War museum is really good, and I think they'd both like that, and I can drag them to the Liberty Bell where they will be unimpressed and I can thoroughly embarrass them, which let's face it, is the whole point to having kids anyway.

I do wish taking the train was easier/cheaper. There's a station near us but it only gets one train a day (and it's not particularly a convenient time), plus using it doubles the cost of the ticket. And the ticket's not that inexpensive to start with. Times like this I miss Poland.

N.B. The Trump administration is now blatantly defying the Supreme Court, pretending that being ordered to "facilitate" Abrego Garcia's return doesn't mean "bring him back".

As Justice Sotomayor noted, the Trump admin's argument in the case would mean that they "could deport and incarcerate any person, including U.S. citizens, without legal consequence, so long as it does so before a court can intervene."

This is time to start screaming in whatever way you can.

The unions' regional apprentice competition happened over last weekend (read: mostly Friday, actually, but it started Thursday and ended Saturday), and was very fun and... tbh easier than I expected???

which, uh. is probably why I was in-the-moment surprised and after-some-thought unsuprised that I placed first in the category I was there for (second-year apprentices).

more specifics/rambling about this )

also possibly the funniest conversation I had during the event happened on the last evening, when I was chatting with two other apprentices. we ended up talking about how we'd all grown up playing D&D 3.5e and now play 5e and have Opinions about which edition we like better (4e got mentioned as being a completely different type of game and therefore not worth talking about). mostly it was like "okay how do you weight realism (what do you mean by that?) vs mechanical simplicity vs ability to make a build you like (and what even is that build)".

then they definitely didn't survive.

And sometimes they definitely did.

And sometimes it's not clear which, and omg the anxiety over this is stressing me out so much that I may need to stop reading if it's not cleared up soon. It's an unfinished fic, so I can't just skip to the end like I normally would, and I can't figure out how to ask "Listen, how are you doing this?" without sounding a bit demanding.

But I'm ridiculous stressed over this.

On the plus side, it's distracting me from how stressed I am about the real world, so there's that! Maybe I should keep reading anyway....
