Baby's first organized sporting event!!

greywash and I went to a hockey game last night, which was the first organized sporting event I have ever attended in my entire life! Our team didn't win, but they scored twice and everyone in the stadium was so psyched!! That was great. Honestly the whole thing was very fast-paced and exciting; excellent fun, hope to do again.

These two exchanges also happened:

breathedout: Oh! ... Thank you.
bartender: Maybe it's just the glasses. You know, she did that Sarah Palin thing.
breathedout: .......... are you saying I look like Sarah Palin??
bartender: Like... Tina Fey is hotter than Sarah Palin.
breathedout, feeling suddenly in need of a shower: In so, so, so many ways...

(Walking back from the stadium, talking about baseball, of which neither of us have any but the remotest knowledge):
greywash: So the Dodgers are out of LA now, but back in the day—
breathedout: They were the Brooklyn Dodgers.
greywash: They were!
breathedout: They played in Ebbets Field.
greywash: They did!
breathedout: I know that from a Tom Waits song, so. On-brand, I guess.
greywash: I know it from Captain America fanfic, so. Also on-brand.

glad you had a good time! the boy is a big hockey fan (though only minor league), and has similarly taken me to a few games when I knew next to nothing about the sport. I still know almost nothing about it, but it is kinda fun to watch everyone zoom around and the crowd get all excited about stuff.

Congratulations! How exciting!!

All of my sports knowledge comes from fanfic, including my SUSPICIOUSLY DETAILED knowledge of Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, captain and centre (respectively) for the Pittsburgh Penguins. Who else is on that team? Um, maybe someone named Flower? What does a centre do? Um, hockeying, mostly? But oh boy do I know a lot about their personal lives.

Oh my god, that bartender... did not know how to talk humans. I'm sure you do not look at all like Sarah Palin! She mostly looks like hate and intolerance wrapped up in face cream.

My wife is really into hockey, and I'd like to be excited with her, so you're a good example of this being an achievable goal! I'm glad it was so much fun!

This all sounds excellent. Pretty much everything I know about North American sport comes from fanfic or Friday Night Lights, so I'm with you on that.

I had to go to a number of hockey (and volleyball and football and basketball) games in high school because I was in band, and participation in pep band was mandatory. I made a constant fuss about how the music kids were required to go to these sporting events and the athletes were never asked to attend our concerts; this accomplished nothing, but in the spirit of protest or something I refused to pay any attention or learn anything about sports in the process. So now everything I know about hockey I learned from Check Please!
